National Environmental Strategy and Action Plan for the Kingdom of Bahrain

 

Economic growth and sustainable development are no longer mutually exclusive but complimentary processes of the same agenda: to protect the natural fragile ecosystems that make life possible and enjoyable without compromising it for future generations. The main objective of this project is to develop Bahrain’s National Environmental Strategy (NES) to serve as the basis for the development of the National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) that should be used as a key instrument for the promotion of sustainable development in the Kingdom.

NEAP to be used as a key instrument for the promotion of sustainable development in the Kingdom.

  Outputs and Achievements:
  2005-2006:
   
i. Developed the first National Environmental Strategy and Action Plan involving all stakeholders through a national steering committee
ii. A full study on the biodiversity of the island was conducted which was considered to be the first national Biodiversity report that can also serve for submission to the Biodiversity Convention.
iii. National Desertification Plan and Strategy was initiated with multiple implications among which is the Desertification Action Plan and GEF’s NCSA (Global Support Programme for National Capacity Self-Assessment) programme requirement. Improvements in air pollution monitoring programmes and the environmental GIS capability were considered as parallel activities under this activity.
