UNDP Bahrain MDG's
Reduce child mortality

MDG Goal 4 Like education, Bahrain’s health centers cater to a growing populace free of charge. The burden on the public health care system is temporarily relieved to some extent by flourishing private hospitals and clinics for those who can afford them. A child mortality rate of 8.7 per 1000 live births is relatively high for Bahrain, a country ranked 39 on the human development index. Its under-five child mortality rate however stands much lower at 2.7 per 1000 live births indicative of improved preventative medical services. In order to address one of the root causes of infant mortality – hereditary blood diseases – the Ministry of Health in collaboration with UNDP has launched a health project intended to control the risk of inheriting blood diseases through education, awareness campaigns and improved diagnostic and preventative medical techniques.

  Indicators:
Target 4a: Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five
  • 4.1 Under-five mortality rate
  • 4.2 Infant mortality rate
  • 4.3 Proportion of 1 year-old children immunised against measles
